2015 Jag Jamboree

Beamer Varsity finishes 2-4 at the Jag Jamboree

We could tell during our morning warmups that there would be a few anxious moments today for some of our players as we got our first real taste of competition.  Some of the Seniors looked at ease but several of our young players looked pretty nervous going into our first set of the day.  We started off with Kentwood, who we’ll see later in league but made lots of attacking errors throughout the match and some key passing errors down the stretch.  We lost to the Lady Conquerors 19-25.

In our 2nd match of the day we faced Kennedy Catholic who in my opinion had the most polished team in the gym featuring a duo of dynamic outside hitters and arguably the best high school top-spin jump server in the State this season. We actually went into the match pretty focused and started with really good energy but faded as the match progressed.  We had a lot of service errors and had some problems adjusting to the speed and pressure of their tough serving and outside attack.  We eventually lost 14-25.

We won our 3rd match against the Graham Kapowsin Eagles, 25-22.  We turned in a solid serving & passing performance, recording several aces and also put pressure on them with a consistent balanced attack.  It was a pretty even match for us but always nice to record your first win of the season!

We played Gig Harbor next – another evenly matched contest.  We played well for most of the set but did appear to lose focus on scoring down the stretch.  We definitely had our chances to surge ahead of this team but didn’t separate when we had our chances and very quickly we found ourselves behind to close out the set losing 21-25.

Our 5th match of the day was against a younger Emerald Ridge Jaguar team that finished last season as the State 4A Final runner-up.  We played them fairly well, but felt like they dominated us in the middle, we just were not able to stop or slow them down as they consistently scored from there.  I thought our outside play was even but we struggled getting a consistent pass and had to play lots of out-of-system balls making it super easy for them to get into their offense.  We lost 19-25.

Our last match of the day was against the Tahoma Lady Bears who were missing a few key players but still a talented team.  We played our best match of the day, and seemed to have lots of energy going into it.  We served consistently and had a pretty balanced offense.  Passing and defense was fairly solid.  We did struggle a little with their outside hitters and gave up the line shot a little too much but were able to put out a 25-21 victory to end the day.  Always nice to finish on a good note.

Overall, I thought we had a solid showing.  I felt our ball control was better than I had initially expected it to be.  We will obviously continue to improve on all facets of the game but I’m pleased about some of the leaps we have already made from tryouts to now.  The team is a little further along than I had expected going into the season and we still have much more room to improve and that’s exciting!

Beamer finishes Top 8 at Kent Classic!

Beamer finishes in the Top 8 at the 2014 Kent Classic!

Beamer Varsity played well at the 2014 Kent Classic on Saturday.  We won our 1st round pool going 4-0 beating Kentwood JV (25-18, 25-13) and then Bothell (25-18, 25-14).   We switched gyms for our 2nd round pool and went 3-1, beating Bothell again (25-21, 25-19) and splitting with Capital (18-25, 25-21).  We narrowly missed taking 1st place in our pool, as Capital had us beat in the tiebreaker system by 5 overall points.  (BTW – Capital went on to finish 2nd overall.)

When we got to bracket play we knew things would get “interesting” for us since both our staring setter and starting libero had some important prior family commitments that required them to leave early and miss the last part of the tournament.  But nonetheless, the Lady Titans rolled on and played well in the Silver bracket semis.  We ran a 6-2 offense and mixed around our entire lineup.  We started our young sophomore (Elisa Chew) at setter, had starting outside hitter (Cassie Neu) play our 2nd setter, started our two young sophomores (Savanna Servive and Mallorie Post) at middles, and then let everyone else play outside or right side.  It was great to see our senior starting middle Reed Copeland be a six rotation player – which is something she has been really wanting to do!  It took our players a little time to make the adjustments and just play volleyball; it looked pretty remedial at first but by the 2nd set it started to click!  We lost to Skyview (18-25, 24-26) and came very close to forcing a 3rd deciding set with the momentum starting to shift in our favor – but fell just a little short.

Was very proud of how we competed all day!  Finishing in the Top 8 out of 30 good teams is a nice accomplishment for this group!

Beamer gets to “Gold” Semi-Finals!

Girls have been working hard in the gym and this past weekend showed how much we have improved and offered glimpses of how good we can be.  We entered the tournament wanting to work on our lineups a little and get all our players a chance to play.  We did that and somehow found ourselves competing with the top 4 teams in the tournament.

Our morning 1st round pool saw us matched up against some tough teams from Prairie and Mount Vernon and Auburn.  We beat Prairie in 2 sets, split with both Mount Vernon and Auburn but somehow managed to come out 1st in our pool with a 4-2 game record.  The top 3 teams in our 1st round pool all ended up in the Top 8 teams in the tournament.

Our second round pool had us matched up against Tahoma, Edmonds-Woodway, and Auburn (again).  We played a tough match against Tahoma winning both sets and were able to win out against Edmonds and Auburn – winning our pool at 6-0.

We jumped to the upper Gold bracket based on our 2nd round pool performance and faced Kennedy Catholic in the semi-final championship match.  We started off extremely well with several monster blocks to start the match; but Kennedy Catholic had a great team and several great players that tested our serve receive and defense.  After starting off well we hit a few bumps as they jumped on us midway through – we eventually lost game 1 (17-25).  In the second game we battled well and the game went back and forth – we just didn’t seem to be able to get ahead and ended up losing game 2 (22-25).  Kennedy went on to win the Tournament, beating Tumwater (2-0) in the Final!

Overall a good finish for our young team that is still learning to play well together.  Had lots of positive things happen for many of our players coming away from this tournament!  Nice job Lady Titans!

Jamboree 2014

Beamer Varsity went 1-5 at the 2014 Emerald Ridge Jamboree on Saturday!

We began the day facing the Christian Faith Eagles, an opponent we will see again very shortly!  We played them evenly through out the game but let them go on a 6 consecutive point scoring spurt that ended up being the difference in the game.  We lost 18-25.

Our second game was against the Graham Kapowsin Eagles.  We were mentally checked-out to start the game and spotted them a big lead before we decided we were ready to play.  GK served short and then long on us with their pinpoint serving junior setter to score the first 10 points of the game, and by the time we started to play we just traded points but could never cut into the lead.  I had to take an early timeout to implore our players to compete as everything went wrong early in the game.  We lost to the eagles 16-25.

Our third game against the Fife Trojans was our best of the day.  I’m glad we bounced back and it looked like we were a dominant team.  We passed well, served well, and put the ball on the floor.  We played defense well enough to run a heavy dose of middle attacking and were able to control the play at the net.  We won 25-10.

Our fourth game was against the defending SPSL South Champion Emerald Ridge Jaguars who finished 3rd at State last season.  We entered the game pretty focused and actually passed well and had good ball control throughout.  We just weren’t able to sideout  – passing was good, defense was decent, we just found ourselves unable to match their net play and unable to serve them tough enough to get them out of system.  We lost 11-25.

Our fifth game was against Seattle Prep who had a good jump float serving team.  We spotted them a few points early but were able to make it up with good serving, defense and net play of our own to cut into the lead.  This was our closest match of the day as we kept trading the lead throughout.  We ended up losing 23-25, but pretty satisfied with our effort given we did not have one of our starting middle players in this game.

Our last game against the Kentridge Chargers was pretty good.  We had descent ball control and were able to find ways to score despite playing around with the lineup.  We got a little tight down the stretch but nothing that would concern me long term.  We lost the game 21-25.

Overall I would give our team a B-, I was pretty happy with the ball control and passing as a whole.  We are obviously going to get better, I think we need to be tougher with our serving.  Everyone needs to be a little more consistent, but I believe we are further along that I had expected to be at this point in the season.

Tryouts Reminder – Email #2

Here is your 2 week reminder that tryouts are coming!  Make sure you are working toward being in shape for the season.

1.  Have you run your mile today?  – Reporting to tryouts in good condition is important!  You have to be able to show the coaching staff your volleyball skill at tryouts but you don’t want to be out of breath (huffing an puffing) because you aren’t conditioned to get through drills.  Take time to run the mile – would recommend you do this 3 times a week so you report to tryouts well conditioned!
2. Core. Core!  Core!! – work those abs and establish a strong core!  Having strong core is crucial to being an elite athlete…especially in volleyball!  I’d recommend 100 crunches, 50 push-ups daily from now until tryouts for the younger players!  For you more experienced athletes… would recommend a 20 minute abdominal/core daily routine!
3. Work on those skills!  – Make time to touch a volleyball once a day!  Play outdoor grass, sand or indoor volleyball.  Get some training, play with friends, get into a tournament!  Whatever you can do to get touches and reps will help get you more prepared!  BTW, PSVBA is holding a 4-day skills camp from August 18-21 for anyone that is interested!  Check out their website for more information http://psvba.com/4d_camp/.
4.  Get your forms completed!  Reminder that you all need to be cleared by the athletic department to be able to participate in tryouts!  That means, you need to have a valid physical, medical form, eligibility form and athletic participation form all turned into the athletic director (Mr. Jerry Peterson).  You can get these forms at the school office whenever they are open.
Tryouts start before the 1st day of school!  So get all this done within the next 2 weeks!   My plan is give you 2 more email reminders to check up on you!  Feel free to pass this along to anyone interested in trying out for Beamer Volleyball!

-Coach Pat
